What Is Desktop as a Service?
IntroDesktop as a Service or DaaS is a concept put in practice through the cloud computing paradigm and is largely similar to Software as a Service (SaaS). It has the same concept as SaaS, there is a product, and it is not just the software, but the entire desktop environment to be made available on demand to any user regardless of geographical location or organizational separation.
Desktop as a service or desktop virtualization uses a client-server model and all computing power being used for processing is that of the server. The client device is merely there to display the screens resulting from the processes and be able to send control signals like touches and swipes, keyboard and mouse, and even local sensors on the client device. In most cases, desktop as a service solutions offer simple connection to the server for sharing of virtual desktops between multiple users.
Sometimes however, organizations require a more powerful application that may not be supported by the server’s sharing mode and might have complex graphics that the network graphics protocols might not be able to support properly, so in this case a client could opt for a dedicated hosted desktop solution which allows for better streaming of functions and even allow for some local processing muscle to be used, usually just the graphics processing part. But this is good as it alleviates stress from the server and makes use of the client device’s processing capabilities. This allows us to eliminate bulky desktop computers and reclaim a lot of office space for more important stuff. It is also secure and all costs are pay-per-use so it is easier on the budget.
This service is being considered as the future of office work because companies are now starting to consider the benefits of DaaS. There would be minimal downtime of your data and applications, even when there is a natural disaster happening in the local area, employees are still able to work from wherever they evacuated to or even from where they are vacationing from. The possibilities that DaaS brings allows organizations to grow and morph for the better, even become global because of work shifting and business continuity.
